FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What is surrogacy?
It is a process in which a woman (the gestational carrier) carries a pregnancy for Intended Parents, who will be the biological and legal parents of the baby.
2. Who can access a surrogacy program?
Heterosexual couples, same-sex couples, and single individuals who wish to build a family.
3. Does Alenia perform medical procedures?
No. Alenia coordinates the entire process, but all medical treatments are carried out exclusively in certified partner clinics.
4. How is the gestational carrier selected?
The carrier is selected by the clinic through medical, psychological, and socioeconomic evaluations. A video call is then arranged between the potential carrier and the Intended Parents.
5. What medical tests are performed on the gestational carrier?
Physical exams, laboratory tests, gynecological and psychological evaluations, and a review of obstetric history.
6. What is Alenia’s role in the process?
Alenia acts as the central bridge between the Intended Parents and our partner clinics. We ensure constant, clear, and organized communication among all parties so that each stage progresses smoothly. We coordinate:
- All communication with the clinic, including appointment scheduling, results, follow-ups, and updates.
- Process logistics, such as documentation, schedules, tests, and medical requirements.
- The connection between clinical decisions and the needs of the Intended Parents, ensuring alignment and transparency.
- Organizational and administrative support, from the beginning through the final delivery of the baby’s documents.
7. How long does a surrogacy process take?
Between 12 and 24 months, depending on embryo creation, matching, and pregnancy progression.
8. What happens if the first transfer is unsuccessful?
The clinic evaluates the cause and proposes a new transfer. Alenia coordinates the logistics and follow-up.
9. Is surrogacy legal in Colombia?
Yes. It is supported by established jurisprudence, provided there is a clear agreement and the Intended Parents contribute the genetic material or have their own embryos.
10. How is the gestational carrier protected?
Through medical and psychological support, continuous monitoring, legal contracts, and assistance throughout the entire pregnancy.
11. Can I go through the process if I do not live in Colombia?
Yes. Alenia coordinates everything: virtual appointments and, in partnership with a travel agency, all arrangements related to travel, accommodation, and other requirements for Intended Parents.
12. Does the gestational carrier have rights over the baby?
No. The legal parents are the Intended Parents, which is confirmed through DNA testing and legal documentation.
13. What type of support will I receive during the process?
Continuous medical (through the partner clinic), legal, emotional, and logistical support.
